LCFT's very own Waukegan Paraprofesional Council President, Ami Montalbano, was selected by the IFT as an Emerging Leader. She was one of three people selected from the entire state of Illinois to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program at the AFT National headquarters from November 4-7, 2023. Over the course of 3 days, the emerging leaders worked with AFT national staff and other leaders from across the country to develop plans, skills, and new strategies. In addition to learning new skills and strategies, they also teamed up with AFT program and policy council members and AFT national vice presidents to learn how to effectively lobby members of congress.
As a member of the 2023 Emerging Leaders' cohort, they receive regular check-ins and support from AFT national staff who will assist them, and their local in carrying out the campaigns & plans developed while at the initial cohort meeting.
Ami was there to help Randi Weingarten and Senator Edward Markey to introduce the Paraprofessionals & Education Support Staff Bill of Rights. Paraprofessionals and Education Staff are the backbone of our education system—they deserve fair compensation, benefits, and working conditions.
